'French Women Don't Get Fat: The secret of eating for
pleasure' is the first, and most famous book from French
Businesswoman Mireille Guiliano. Mireille Guiliano is
former CEO of Clicquot, Inc., a US firm she founded in
1984, and long term spokeswoman for Veuve Clicquot
Ponsardin, a famous premium Champagne house in Reims,
France. Mireille Guiliano herself has written three
books, the first of which 'French Women Don't Get Fat:
The secret of eating for pleasure', was a worldwide
bestseller in 2005. She has since appeared on Oprah, The
Today Show, CBS' The Early Show, CNN and Nighttalk,
amongst others. She has been profiled in a range of
publications including the New York Times, TIME and
Newsweek; and regularly contributes articles on food,
wine and lifestyle to a number of publications, including
Bon Appétit, Newsweek and Town & Country. Her
website, of the same name, is designed as a community for
those who wish to supplement what they have learned from
reading Mireille Guiliano's book with additional tips,
advice, recipes and articles (in short, what Mireille
Guiliano describes as 'French wisdom').
The type of dieting that is advocated by 'French Women
Don't Get Fat: The secret of eating for pleasure' is,
quite simply, an exercise in lifetime moderation.
Mireille recommends that all women can experience gradual
weight loss, and then the maintenance of a healthy, trim
figure, through eating fresh, high quality food in
moderation. She indicates that woman can eat bread,
pastries, cakes and even drink champagne as part of a
balanced healthy lifestyle. Mireille indicates that, far
from advocating a fat-free or low-calorie diet, all women
can lose weight by eating natural, good food (fruit,
vegetables, nuts, bread, wine) in moderation. All of her
advice comes from her own personal experiences of living
in both France and America, experiences which have
colored her attitudes to food and dieting. Indeed, one of
the most enjoyable aspects of Mireille's book is the way
in which she blends her dietary advice with what is
essentially a memoir of her interesting life.
The website, 'French Women Don't Get Fat', combines the
advice that is provided in Mireille's books with an
online community, where users can share advice, tips,
articles, recipes and more. Users can construct daily and
weekly meal plans, based on Mireille's diet principles,
intended not only to help them trim down and stay slim,
but also to make their lives easier when planning menus
and shopping for ingredients. Users can also generate
shopping lists and check out exclusive recipes brought to
the website by Mireille herself. Users can chat to each
other about their experiences of following the 'diet',
share recipes and exchange advice using the online
message boards, which are surprisingly popular. All in
all, considering the website is free, there's a lot of
good advice floating around within this little gem.
That said, though, there is a downside to Mireille's
system. If you are very overweight (i.e. 3 stone or more
overweight), you're going to struggle to see any
substantial weight loss whilst following the 'French
Women Don't Get Fat' system, as the diet doesn't really
control your calorie intake that much, not does it
provide a great deal of advice as to how to exercise to
burn excess calories. While the 'French Women Don't Get
Fat' system is perfect if you're coming to the end of a
strict diet, as the recipes are healthy, wholesome and
fresh, and will introduce you to a way of eating that is
neither gluttonous nor restrictive, it's less likely to
be helpful if you are very overweight and looking for
noticeable weight loss.
If you're interested in what the 'French Women Don't Get
Fat' system has to offer, check out the site by hitting

However, if you think the expensive
foods and wines recommended by Mireille may over-stretch
your budget, or you prefer a diet where you count your
calories closely, or think you would benefit from a more
thorough fitness plan, we recommend you check out our top
