The Jenny Craig weight loss, nutrition
and fitness program has been helping its members lose
weight, get in shape and start feeling great since 1983,
when the company was founded in Australia. Jenny Craig
has since become a worldwide fitness guru and health
sensation, and the Jenny Craig brand has been rolled out
worldwide. In 1985 the Jenny Craig company began its
program in the United States, and later, the brand
successfully expanded into Canada, New Zealand and most
recently, to the UK. In 2000, the Jenny Craig brand
became part of the Nestle Nutrition brand, and continues
to serve thousands of satisfied customers worldwide.
The Jenny Craig system is based upon a unique combination
of healthy eating diet plan and meal delivery system. The
system is intended to support users as they make
substantial changes to their diet by guiding them in
their food choices through the delivery of 'part meals',
which are supplemented by the dieters' own grocery
shopping. For the first part of the diet, which lasts a
few months, users eat three 'Jenny's Cuisine' meals per
day and two healthy snacks. Users receive the main part
of each of the meals, but are guided in grocery shopping
(to supplement the meals, with vegetables for example) by
their diet plan, ensuring that dieters with the Jenny
Craig system learn good food habits along the way.
Dieters also take part in a tailored fitness and exercise
program, which is personalized to each individual dieter
based upon their level of fitness and activity, and their
personal preferences. We were particularly impressed by
the way in which Jenny Craig combines regular everyday
exercise and activities with her flexible fitness plan,
meaning that taking the stairs instead of the elevator,
or walking to the grocery store count towards the daily
exercise requirement. This holistic approach to exercise
ensures that users feel motivated throughout the
program.
Throughout the Jenny Craig system users are required to
have regular contact with a Jenny Craig Diet Consultant,
who guides the individual member through their diet.
Dieters are free to decide whether to meet with their
consultant at a local meeting or center, or to use the
'Jenny at Home' system and engage with their consultant
online or over the phone. We were particularly encouraged
by the flexibility of the Jenny Craig system in this
respect, and felt it appreciated the different needs of
Jenny Craig clients. In a similar vein, the Jenny Craig
system also runs parallel diet systems appropriate to the
specific needs of men, seniors and teens, so that
everyone can benefit from the Jenny Craig diet system
Generally, we were impressed with the Jenny Craig diet
program, as we felt it provided a practical solution to
weight loss, whilst providing dieters with long-term
improvement, such as good grocery shopping habits for
example. A range of online tools, such as trackers,
forums and chat rooms make the process of dieting with
Jenny Craig fun and supportive and the personalized
nature of much of the plan is likely to encourage users
to keep going with the diet. We did, however think that
the slightly unpredictable cost of the plan (due to its
personalized nature) meant that the Jenny Craig system
might not be suitable for everyone. That said, users are
able to use the e-tools that are featured on the online
site free of charge, so even if you're not using the
