Joining Fee:

  • SeattleSutton's pricing policy differs between states, so in order to find out exactly what the program would cost for you, you need to enter your city and state into the 'pricing' section of the website. For your information, the following costs apply in New York City, which we expect to represent the upper limit of the cost of the SeattleSutton plan:
    • 1200 Calorie Full Hamper - $249
    • 2000 Calorie Full Hamper - $279
    • 1200 Calorie Half Hamper - $145
    • 2000 Calorie Half Hamper - $160

Features:

  • Diet features:
    • SeattleSutton is a premium meal delivery service, which ensures that clients lose weight by providing strictly calorie controlled meals for every day of the week.
    • SeattleSutton allows you to eat frequently throughout the day, so you never get hungry and you're not constantly craving food. Eat whenever you like!
    • SeattleSutton operates on a 5-week rotational menu, so you don't find yourself eating the same foods too often.
    • All meals are portion controlled, so you aren't tempted to eat too much.
    • All meals and snacks are delivered in hampers each week ready for you to pop in the microwave and enjoy!
    • Ideal for busy lifestyles, as you don't have to spend time preparing, planning and shopping for your diet - it's all done for you!
    • Choose between 1200 calorie or 2000 calories a day, full or half hampers. If you choose a half hamper you get 12 meals instead of the full 21, meaning you can retain some control over your diet by cooking for yourself.
  • Fitness features:
    • Because the diet is based upon a calorie controlled meal delivery service, users are advised to supplement their diet plan with regular exercise. Whilst this is recommended, SeattleSutton does not offer any advice on a particular fitness plan.
  • Expert Advice:
    • If you need any extra help or advice or just need some support, then you can always get in touch with SeattleSutton diet advisers who are available to help by phone or email.
  • Community Support:
    • SeattleSutton runs a blog and occasionally runs user competitions and other promotions, but generally, provides no community support.
  • Help Files / Technical Support:
    • Users can contact SeattleSutton to discuss their plan or any specific requirements using a dedicated phone helpline.
    • Users can order their meals and update their account details online, hassle-free.

Editor's Verdict:

Seattle Sutton Healthy Eating is a family-owned meal replacement and delivery service based in Illinois. Seattle Sutton intends to provide its customers with a no gimmick approach to convenient, healthy eating, aiming to help those who wish to lose weight or address other risks or health problems such as diabetes, heart disease or hypertension. In recent years, meal delivery services have become particularly popular in America, with a number of major US firms springing up to provide such services (we also review many of these, including BistroMD, ChefsDiet and DietToGo). Seattle Sutton is founded on the idea that delicious, wholesome and healthy food is the foundation of weight loss and good health, and has been preparing thousands of health meals each week since it was founded in 1985.

The Seattle Sutton system is simple, though not unique in the diet and weight loss market. Dieters simply sign up to the meal plan that is most appropriate to their weight loss needs and lifestyle (either 1200 calories or 2000 calories per day), and whether the dieter wishes to have a full hamper (providing all meals for a week) or half hamper (providing 12 meals for the week). We were particularly impressed by the way that users could decide whether to retain some control over their own diets by opting for the half hamper, although the website wasn't particularly clear which meals would be delivered (and thus which meals users would have to cook for themselves). On the other hand however, whilst some users may find being able to cook meals from themselves improves their portion control and attitude towards food, others may find the temptation of cooking for themselves too great, and bad food choices for half of the week can eradicate any good work achieved by following the Seattle Sutton plan - so choose carefully!

We did feel there were some notable downsides to the Seattle Sutton plan, some of which are common to all meal delivery programs, while other are more specific to the service offered by Seattle Sutton. The most major downfall is that meals are set in specific menus, each week, on a five-week rotation. Unlike other meal delivery systems, where users get to choose meals they like from a vast menu, thus eliminating the possibility that meals they dislike will appear on the menu, with Seattle Sutton, users simply have to eat what appears on the weekly menu! Similarly, there is no Seattle Sutton menu suitable for vegetarians. The FAQs section of the website indicates that users who are vegetarian should either remove the meat from meals containing meat, or give the meals containing meat away to friends. We were distinctly unimpressed by this aspect of the Seattle Sutton plan. With 5 out of 7 evening meals, and 4 out of 7 lunches containing meat or fish (on the menu we checked), vegetarian dieters using the Seattle Sutton plan would be giving away or disassembling most of the food they received. Also, users who plan to stay on the Seattle Sutton program for a long time will find the repetitive menu a little annoying, too.

All in all, the Seattle Sutton program is a good meal delivery service that offers nutritionally balanced menus through its convenient delivery service. At around $250 per week, however, the plan is expensive compared to similar services. We would not recommend this service for dieters with specific dietary needs, allergies or those who follow a vegetarian diet, as Seattle Sutton seems unwilling to compromise in that respect.
