The Self Diet Club is a diet, health,
nutrition and fitness program run by Self
Magazine for the benefit of its subscription readers.
Self Magazine is an American magazine specializing in
fitness, health and nutrition for women. Started by
Condé Nast Publications in 1979 and currently
published 12 times a year, it has more than 5 million
readers. The Self Diet Club features all of the
nutritional research and expertise that can be found
within the pages of Self Magazine, but with a range of
complementary resources and tools that help the average
dieter improve their dieting results and weight loss
success.
Through providing users with a range of supportive
features and materials, the Self Diet Club motivates its
users to stick to their chosen diets and develop a
generally healthier lifestyle. Users can create their own
diet profile, complete with all vital statistics, and use
this profile to set diet goals based on projected weight
loss. Similarly users keep a food log that contains
information about all food consumed in a day. By doing
so, users can use this information, coupled with the Self
food database, to generate a calories 'balance' for a
particular day. The food database contains more than
20,000 entries and also contains a great number of menu
items from popular restaurants and fast food outlets, so
users can work out exactly how many calories they
consumed in a day. The food database is an excellent
tool, because it makes dieters more aware of the actual
calorific value of the foods they are eating, so that
they can decide where substitutions need to be made in
order to reduce calorie intake.
Less impressive are the tools related to exercise that are
featured on the Self Diet Club. While users do get to use
an exercise log, to record the exercise and activities
that they engage in every day (as well as the
calorie-burning effect that that activity has) these
tools seemed to us to be of poor quality and not very
well thought out. The exercise log didn't, for example,
allow users to enter their height, weight and gender to
get an accurate assessment of how many calories would be
burnt as a result of their exercise. Equally, the site
doesn't feature an exercise directory that demonstrates
to users how to engage in particular exercises if they
have never done so before.
The Self Diet Club is a must for all Self Magazine
subscribers, as you're effectively paying for it within
your subscription. If you're not particularly interested
in Self Magazine, we wouldn't suggest buying a
subscription just for what is on offer at the Self Diet
Club. Whilst there are some useful features in terms of
diet support, the fitness features that are available on
the site certainly seem like an afterthought and aren't
particularly helpful. The site itself is fairly difficult
to navigate and use and many of the features seem a
little temperamental and difficult to use. Click on the button below to check out SelfDietClub.com for yourself...
