Editors Verdict:

Shrink Yourself is a totally unique online weight loss service that concentrates on addressing the underlying emotional issues which affect a particular dieter's eating habits. Studies suggest that in most cases, overeating and binge eating is the product of underlying emotional stress which manifests itself through excessive overeating. The Shrink Yourself program intends to root out these issues and address them head on, through the use of interactive online therapy sessions, quizzes, videos and more, so that when users begin to diet (or simply change their lifestyle to support a healthier way of living) dieters are more likely to succeed as they have already addressed their underlying emotional issues related to food. Shrink Yourself has been featured in Time Magazine, Good Housekeeping Magazine, MSN, People and USA Today. The program is also publically endorsed by Governor Mike Huckabee and the late Senator Edward Kennedy; and has been clinically proven as successful and based on sound medical principles by UCLA.

Shrink Yourself allows users to get back in control of their weight and eating habits by following a twelve-week course of online therapy. Users learn how to make long-term changes to their dietary habits by learning what the source of their bad eating regime is and dealing with the issues that underline those problems. Users take part in twelve online sessions, which take the form of in-person therapy sessions. During these sessions, users address a range of issues that are commonly related to the client's perception of food, their attitudes to eating and diet, and reasons for overeating.

By means of illustration, the first class on the program deals with solving the internal conflicts that exist between the client's desire to lose weight (and what motivates them to do so) and their reasons for eating and attitudes to food. By understanding the reasons why a person is unlikely to succeed at dieting (i.e. the conflicts that exist between these two facets of motivation) users are supported in making long term changes that are ultimately beneficial for their weight loss success. That said, we're not convinced that all users can benefit from this form of advice. Much of the 'therapy' is administered through lifestyle questionnaires - the responses to which are automatically generated from the answers given. We can't help but feel that the true force of such advice is lost in the way that the program delivers this sterile information and could ultimately benefit from a more personal touch. Users who subscribe to the whole course also get the opportunity to speak online with a Shrink Yourself Emotional Eating Expert, who, we think, could help personalize the advice. If you don't sign up for the complete program however, this advice will cost you $75.

Shrink Yourself certainly offers dieters a unique approach to addressing their weight loss problems. If our readers find themselves continually incapable of sticking to diets and falling back into a cycle of binge overeating, the service offered by Shrink Yourself could be a useful leg up into the positive mental attitude needed to succeed. We wouldn't suggest however, that this program is going to be successful for everyone, as the reasons people struggle with their weight are complex and broad. Shrink Yourself may well be the answer for you, but it certainly doesn't compare to a personalized, professional course of therapy which could, ultimately, prove a great deal more effective.
