Editor's Verdict:

The Daily Plate is a weight loss resource site, which, like many similar sites, provides dieters with a range of tracking and calculating tools in order to support them as they diet. The Daily Plate does not actually provide users with a particular diet structure to follow (such as, for example, the Abs Diet Online, or South Beach Diet), but simply acts as a 'resource center', where users can collect and analyze information about their diet performance. It is hoped that, with a range of such tracking tools, users will feel more motivated and therefore be more successful. The Daily Plate is brought to the market by Livestrong.org, the website for the Lance Armstrong Livestrong Foundation. This organization largely campaigns and fundraises to support cancer research, but these healthy eating elements of the site are part of the foundation's wider drive to improve health. Whilst most of the resources available on the site are provided free of charge, if you do decide to sign up to gold membership, a proportion of your membership fees will be used directly by the foundation in its ongoing good work.

The Daily Plate has a range of useful resources and tools that apply to all dieters, regardless of which diet they are using at the time. One of the best tools is the calorie counter and food database, which contains details of more than 40,000 foods. This, along with the rest of The Daily Plate has been improved to make it more user-friendly and we must say it shows - it really is one of the most simple and intuitive calorie counting tools we have used. Users also get to use a similarly excellent activity tracker, which lets them count the number of calories they burn on a daily basis through a range of activities. Added to this is a range of community features, such as forums and discussion boards, which are lively and active, and will no doubt provide the support and motivation that users need to continue dieting successfully.

If you choose to upgrade your membership to gold membership The Daily Plate opens up access to a number of additional features. As well as all of the above features that are available to every user, gold members get access to full nutritional label information for each item in the calorie calculator database. Whilst this is useful, ultimately most diets are only concerned with the calorie, fat, carbohydrate and protein figures associated with a particular food, and all of this data is available for free as a regular member. Users can also get access to a bolstered set of tracking tools including a sleep tracker, heart rate tracker and a tool to track the number of cigarettes smoked in a day. Whilst some users may find these features useful, we can't see a great deal of general appeal in them and most diets wouldn't require a user to document such information. Finally, dieters also get access to a live chat function so that they can chat in real time with other members of The Daily Plate. Unfortunately, we don't think the features you get access to are useful enough to warrant paying quite so much for gold membership, and so, even though the Livestrong Foundation benefits from your donation, we really couldn't recommend it.

The calorie counter and activity database are some of the most easy to use and intuitive we have come across in our reviewing, so we would certainly recommend using the site's free membership for this alone.
